The Bicentennial of Photography has Begun

THE BICENTENNIAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEGUN 1827–2027 | Two Hundred Years Since Light Began Writing History Two centuries ago, humanity discovered a way to hold a fleeting moment still. Before photography, the world could be seen, remembered and drawn. But there came a remarkable moment when light itself began to leave an image behind. That moment changed human history. As the world enters the Bicentennial of Photography, 1827–2027, the story of photography is being revisited—not merely as the history of a technological invention, but as the story of humanity’s extraordinary relationship with light, memory and time.At the heart of that story stands Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, whose pioneering heliographic experiments in France opened a new chapter in visual history. WHEN LIGHT BECAME AN IMAGE The history of photography begins not simply with a camera, but with a dream:The dream of capturing light and preserving an image created by nature itself. At his estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, France, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce spent years experimenting with light-sensitive substances and methods of permanently recording images. His most celebrated surviving work, “View from the Window at Le Gras,” created in the 1826–1827 period, stands as one of the foundational images in the history of photography. What appears to be a simple view from a window is, in historical terms, extraordinary.Roofs, buildings and sky were transformed into a permanent visual record through the action of light. It was more than an image. It was a moment when light began to write history. TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF VISUAL MEMORY From Niépce’s heliography, photography developed through a succession of remarkable discoveries and innovations. The daguerreotype of Louis Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot’s calotype, Frederick Scott Archer’s wet-collodion process and the work of early photographic entrepreneurs such as Richard Beard helped photography evolve from experimental science into a practical and increasingly accessible medium. Photographic studios appeared. Portraiture changed. Cities began to preserve their own visual memories. Wars were documented. Scientific discoveries were recorded. Families began to preserve the faces of generations. THE CAMERA CHANGED. LIGHT DID NOT. Today, an image can be captured in a fraction of a second. The bulky cameras of the nineteenth century have given way to compact digital cameras and smartphones. Glass plates have been replaced by digital sensors. Darkrooms have given way to screens. Yet one fundamental element remains unchanged: LIGHT. The same light that once formed an image during Niépce’s experiments continues to create photographs through the sensors of today’s cameras and mobile phones. That is why the Bicentennial of Photography is much more than an anniversary of a technology. It is a celebration of two hundred years of humanity’s relationship with light. A PHOTOGRAPH IS A WITNESS History is often written in words. But sometimes, a photograph can speak with a force that thousands of words cannot match. An old photograph can bring back a vanished street. A family portrait can return us to a forgotten generation. A war photograph can confront us with the human cost of history. A scientific photograph can reveal what the human eye cannot see. Even the face of an ordinary person can become a document of an entire era. Photography is therefore more than the act of making an image. It is the art of memory. It is a document of time. It is history written in light. 1827–2027 As photography approaches its bicentennial in 2027, the world is being invited to look back at the extraordinary journey that began with the pioneering experiments of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. It is a journey from heliography to film. From glass plates to colour photography. From photographic studios to photojournalism. From analogue cameras to digital imaging. From the darkroom to the smartphone. And now, from conventional photography to computational imaging and artificial intelligence. The technology has transformed almost beyond recognition. But the essential act remains the same: Light enters. An image is formed. A moment becomes memory. A TRIBUTE FROM INDIA India has its own rich photographic history—from the earliest photographic practices of the nineteenth century to the extraordinary work of contemporary Indian photographers.Within this wider history, an important commemorative initiative is taking shape in Kerala. At Vathikulam, Mavelikara, the Joseph Nicéphore Niépce Foundation is establishing a memorial dedicated to Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. The memorial is envisioned not simply as a monument, but as a place where the history of photography can be remembered, studied and shared with future generations. It represents an Indian tribute to a pioneer whose experiments helped open the door to the photographic age.A monument to a man who taught light to remember. MORE THAN A CELEBRATION A bicentennial should not be merely an occasion for ceremony. It should be an opportunity to rediscover history. Who created the first successful permanent photographic images? What experiments made photography possible? How did photography transform science, art, journalism and society? How did the camera change the way humanity sees itself? These are questions worth asking as the world celebrates two centuries of photography. The Bicentennial therefore invites us not only to look at photographs, but to look through them—to understand the people, discoveries and ideas that made our visual world possible. THE NEXT CHAPTER In 1827, Niépce looked through a window and found a way to preserve what light revealed. Today, humanity looks at the world through cameras carried in our pockets, satellites orbiting Earth, scientific instruments probing distant galaxies and intelligent systems capable of analysing millions of images. The photographic future is changing rapidly. Yet its oldest poetry remains unchanged: Light touches a surface. A moment becomes still. The still moment becomes memory. And memory becomes history. That is why the Bicentennial of Photography is not the end of a story. It is the beginning of a new chapter. From 1827 to 2027, two hundred years of photography invite the world to pause, look back and remember the extraordinary journey that began when light first learned to leave its own image behind. And as we step into the next century, one question remains: What history will the photographs of tomorrow write? SAJI ENNAKKAD Chairman Joseph Nicephore Niepce
